The Fourth Noble Truth

There is a method to bring about this end

Shakyamuni Buddha then taught a precise method to bring about an end to our unsatisfactory state of being. A genuine lasting happiness can only be brought about by purifying one's mind, through cutting the root of the continuous round of suffering, which is our fundamental ignorance. It is our habitual tendency to grasp at the illusion that phenomena exist with an independent nature, totally unrelated to other phenomena and to our own perception of things and situations.

To free ourselves from this suffering, we must gain full insight into the true way in which things exist, that is the ultimate nature of reality. To do this, we should follow a path which develops wisdom that acts as an antidote to the ignorance veiling this true nature.

This training or spiritual path has been described in different ways by the many different traditions of Buddhism that have evolved from Shakyamuni's teachings, however there are fundamentals which are common to all traditions.

The information above was collected from various sources,
mostly the teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
