About Root Institute
Root Institute aims to provide a realistic contribution to the preservation of the ancient culture and wisdom of India.
Root Institute provides a conducive environment for people of any nationality or religion to study and meditate on the Mahayana Buddhist teachings.
We offer comfortable, clean and affordable accommodation, a well-stocked library, delicious vegetarian food, regular Buddhist meditation courses and workshops, and fully serviced private retreat facilities.
The institute is a 15 minute walk from the Great Mahabodhi Stupa of Buddha's Enlightenment, a short flight from Kathmandu or an overnight train from the capital cities of New Delhi and Calcutta.
It was the aspiration of Root Institute's founder, Lama Yeshe, that the institute 'return the historic kindness of the Indian people'. As part of this ideal the institute runs social work projects which give immediate benefit to those in unfortunate circumstances: that is the village communities of Bihar.
The institute is a registered, non-profit, charitable trust, incorporated under the laws of India, and is managed together with its social work projects, by volunteers. All our projects are completely dependent on the kind generosity of sponsors and donors.
